What is the history of red vermouth in Spain?

Red vermouth has a deep tradition in Spain, especially tied to the ritual of the aperitif.

Its origin dates back to 18th-century Italy, but it was in Spain, and specifically in cities like Reus or Madrid, where red vermouth acquired its own identity. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, many wineries began to develop their own artisan recipes, using local wines and Mediterranean botanicals.

The result was a more aromatic and spiced vermouth, adapted to the Spanish taste. Over time, it became a quintessential social drink, served with olives or a slice of orange, and has regained prominence in recent years thanks to the rise of traditional and gourmet trends.

What brands of red vermouth do we offer at Gastronomic Spain?

At Gastronomic Spain, we select red vermouth brands that represent the best of Spanish tradition and flavor. Currently, we have three major references:

  • Zarro: A classic from Madrid, made with more than 80 natural botanicals. Ideal for those looking for a vermouth with intense character. The special vermouth from Zarro is the best-selling one in our online store.

  • Brisamare: Galician vermouth based on albariño wine, perfect for those who enjoy a balanced and sophisticated flavor. The best example would be the Red Vermouth Brisamare we have in our catalogue, which overflows with elegance and quality.

  • Osborne: A vermouth with the seal of quality from one of the most emblematic wineries in Spain, with a recipe that combines tradition and modernity. And, for vermouth connoisseurs, we have Osborne’s premium red vermouth.

Each one has its unique personality, but all share the authenticity of Spanish red vermouth.

How long does red vermouth last once opened?

Once opened, red vermouth can stay in good condition for between one and three months, as long as it is properly stored.

To maintain its flavor and aroma, it is recommended to close the bottle well after each use and store it in the refrigerator, away from light and sources of heat.

Over time, it may lose part of its aromatic intensity, since contact with air oxidizes the components of the wine and botanicals. Although it does not become harmful to health, its organoleptic quality (smell, taste, texture) may be affected.

That’s why the ideal is to consume it within the first few weeks to enjoy it at its best.
