1. What’s the difference between peppers and piquillo peppers?

While both belong to the same plant family, standard peppers and piquillo peppers differ in variety, flavor, origin, and culinary use.

  • Common peppers (green, red, yellow): These are widely cultivated and vary in flavor depending on the color. Green peppers are slightly bitter, while red and yellow ones are sweeter. They’re versatile and used in many dishes—raw in salads, sautéed in stir-fries, roasted, stuffed, or as a base for sauces.

  • Piquillo peppers: These are a specific variety from the Lodosa region in northern Spain, recognized with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). They’re small, triangular, and known for their sweet, smoky flavor. Traditionally roasted over open flames and peeled by hand, they’re usually sold canned and often served stuffed or as a gourmet side dish.

2. What are the health benefits of peppers?

Peppers are packed with nutrients and offer numerous health advantages:

  • Rich in vitamin C, which supports immune function and helps absorb iron.
  • High in antioxidants like beta-carotene, which protect against cellular damage.
  • Good source of fiber, aiding digestion and promoting gut health.
  • Low in calories and high in water, making them ideal for weight management.
  • Contain anti-inflammatory compounds, beneficial for reducing chronic inflammation.
  • Provide vitamin B6 and folate, essential for brain and nervous system health.
  • Support eye health thanks to carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin, especially in red peppers.
