What's the difference between a sparkling wine and cava?
Although cava is technically a type of sparkling wine, not all sparkling wines are cava. The main difference lies in the production method and origin.
Cava is produced exclusively under the Cava Denomination of Origin, following strict regulations and using the traditional method (second fermentation in the bottle).
On the other hand, sparkling wines can be made using different techniques, such as the Charmat method (fermentation in tanks) or the ancestral method, giving them a lighter or fruitier style.
Additionally, sparkling wine can come from various regions and is not limited to a specific area or grape varieties. If you're looking for something more informal, fruity, or modern, sparkling wine can be a great alternative to more classic cava.
How should sparkling wine be served properly?
To fully enjoy a sparkling wine, it's essential to serve it well chilled, ideally between 6 and 8°C (43–46°F).
Avoid putting the bottle in the freezer — the best way is to chill it in an ice bucket with water and ice for at least 20 minutes. When opening the bottle, do so gently to avoid losing bubbles: twist the bottle, not the cork, and hold it firmly with a cloth.
As for the glass, the best choice is a flute or tulip-shaped glass, as it helps preserve the bubbles and concentrate the aromas.
Serve in small amounts to maintain both temperature and carbonation. With these simple steps, your sparkling wine will keep its freshness, effervescence, and flavor from the first glass to the last
