What is the difference betweena liqueur and a spirit?
Although they are often used as synonyms, they are not exactly the same. A spirit is any alcoholic beverage with an alcohol content above 15%, obtained through distillation processes (such as orujo, whisky, or vodka).
A liqueur, on the other hand, is a spirit to which sugar, herbs, fruits, creams, or other aromatic ingredients have been added, giving it a sweeter or smoother flavor.
For example, herbal liqueur, orujo cream, or pacharán are liqueurs, while dry anise or white orujo are spirits without sweet additions. Both groups have their place in Spanish gastronomic culture, whether as digestifs or as cocktail ingredients.
What types of liqueurs do we offer at Gastronomic Spain?
Within our selection of liqueurs, you’ll find a wide variety of flavors and styles, ideal both for after-meal sipping and for use in cocktails. Some of the most notable include:
-
Cazalla cream: a creamy fusion of traditional Andalusian anise.
-
Orujo cream: typical from northern Spain, smooth and perfect as a dessert drink.
-
Herbal liqueur: with an intense, aromatic flavor, ideal as a digestif.
-
Pacharán: a sloe berry liqueur highly valued in Navarra.
-
Agua de Valencia (bottled): although technically a cocktail, when sold as a ready-to-drink beverage, it can be classified as a bottled liqueur.
In this category, you’ll also find Spanish versions of international classics like whisky, vodka, or rum, especially when they are handcrafted in Spain or released as special editions.
